How to Install Corner Guards: The Right Corner Guards for Your Space

Preserving the integrity of wall corners and surfaces in high-traffic areas requires effective protective measures. Corner guards provide a robust solution to mitigate the wear and tear sustained from routine activities and the occasional impacts from moving furniture. This article delineates a detailed methodology on how to install corner guards, ensuring the protection of structural aesthetics and functionality.

Installing corner guards is a strategic approach to enhance the durability and appearance of building interiors. Whether applied in commercial settings or residential spaces, corner guards act as a preventative barrier, safeguarding wall corners from potential damage. This guide aims to furnish you with comprehensive instructions on how to install corner guards, equipping you with the necessary skills to execute the task with precision.

Materials Required:

  • Corner guards
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or marker
  • Suitable adhesive (construction adhesive or double-sided tape, depending on the corner guard type)
  • Clean cloth
  • Isopropyl alcohol or soapy water

Step 1: Select the Appropriate Type of Corner Guard

The initial step involves selecting an appropriate corner guard, tailored to the specific environmental conditions and aesthetic preferences of your space. Corner guards are available in a variety of materials including plastic, rubber, metal, and wood. Plastic guards are typically utilized in educational and residential settings due to their cost-effectiveness and diverse color options. Conversely, metal guards are favored in industrial and healthcare environments because of their superior durability.

Step 2: Surface Preparation

Effective installation begins with thorough surface preparation. Ensure that the wall corners are devoid of dirt and moisture. Clean the installation area with a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol or soapy water to remove any debris or oils, which facilitates a stronger adhesive bond.

Step 3: Measuring and Marking

Measure the desired height for the corner guard placement, which might range from floor to ceiling or cover a partial section of the wall. Use a pencil to lightly mark the top and bottom endpoints on both sides of the corner, ensuring alignment and precision in placement.

Step 4: Adhesive Application

Apply the chosen adhesive to the rear side of the corner guard. For construction adhesives, a zigzag pattern is effective, whereas double-sided tape should be aligned along the edges. Apply sparingly to prevent excess adhesive from seeping out during the attachment process.

Step 5: Installing the Corner Guard

Align the corner guard with the pre-marked guidelines on the wall. Press the guard firmly from one end to the other, ensuring even and secure attachment. For more rigid materials, a rubber mallet can be used to gently secure the guard into place.

Step 6: Final Adjustments

After positioning the corner guard, press along its entire length to solidify the bond with the wall surface. Allow the adhesive to cure as per the manufacturer’s recommendations before proceeding with any further surface treatments such as painting or cleaning.

Conclusion

Understanding how to install corner guards is an invaluable skill that enhances the longevity and aesthetic quality of your environment. By adhering to meticulous installation practices—ensuring clean surfaces, precise measurements, and secure attachment—you can effectively protect your walls from everyday impacts and wear. Installing corner guards not only preserves the structural integrity but also contributes to the maintained visual appeal of the space.

How to install Corner Guards

There are various methods you can use to install corner guards, depending on the type of guard you choose. Most corner guards are easy to install, and in a few simple steps and proper preparation, you will have your corner guards in place. The below guide gives instructions on how to install corner guards for both the screw-on type and the adhesive type corner guards. Read on.

Adhesive Corner Guards

Prepare the wall surface by cleaning to ensure it is dust free.

Get the height measurement and corner guard fit, and cut to fit if necessary.

If you need to cut the guard, mark the place you need to cut and use snips or a miter saw.

Put 0.25" beads of adhesive in beads at the backside of each corner guard wing to ensure that the adhesive lies at the wing center to prevent it from squeezing out.

Align the corner guard placement from the beginning of the wall and the bottom of the corner guard. If perfectly aligned, gradually press the corner guard onto the wall surface from the bottom to the top.

Apply continuous pressure on the guard for proper adhesion

Ensure to clean out any excess adhesive before curing

Ensure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on an adhesive set time and cure time

Double Sided Tape Corner Guards

Prepare the wall surface by cleaning

Check height measurement and corner guard fit and cut down the length if needed.

Remove the tape backing from one corner guard wing

Start peeling at 3” parts of the backing on the opposite wing. This will leave the 3” part open and off the corner guard

Place the corner, ensuring that the taped side sits evenly against the corner

Once the taped part is in place, peel out the remaining backing by pulling out the open 3” part against the wall and away from the corner guard

Press the guard firmly against the wall for full adhesion
